‘Mindfulness’ is in real danger of becoming just a banal, superficial relaxation technique in the West. This is a good reminder that there’s so much more to it than that. The practice of compassion is really hard, as is learning to be at peace with the thought of death. I worry that the understanding of mindfulness is getting thinner and shallower the more it is taught by people who have not gone very deeply themselves, and that there will eventually be a backlash, with critics saying we’ve all been duped, and that sitting watching your mind is a stupid way to spend your time, when you could be relaxing with friends over a drink.
